By Robert Marrujo:: It's been a long time since developer Rare has put out a game anywhere near as ambitious as Sea of Thieves. Rare had spent almost a decade toiling away at making Xbox Avatars and Kinect games, practically becoming a pale shadow of its former self as one of the premier studios in the video game industry. With the announcement of Sea of Thieves at E3 2016, players were wowed by the open-world majesty of the game and more than a few longtime fans were anxious to see Rare reclaim its status as a marquee developer.
In a recent presentation at Gamescom 2017, Rare revealed that not only will the game be playable on both Windows and Xbox One, but that it will also feature crossplay between the two platforms. Rare didn't stop there, however, also confirming that the title will be scaleable to accommodate multiple tiers of PCs. If you're rocking a powerful gaming setup, the game can play at 4K and 60fps, which is great. For those with more modest (or old and rickety) PCs, there's also the option to lock in performance at 540p and 15fps.
That's sub-HD, of course, but it means that more players will be able to get in on the fun, even if they can't muster up the graphical wizardry of others. It's a very open-minded, player-friendly approach that this write can't help but applaud. Making gaming open for more people should always be on the minds of developers and this is a wonderful example of exactly that. Now let's just hope that Sea of Thieves can live up to expectations when it launches at some point in 2018.
