Spoilers ahead for both The War of Jokes and Riddles and Bruce's marriage proposal!
By Robert Marrujo:: DC Comics has quite a lot going on in the world of Batman. Between Dark Nights: Metal and his own series, the character is all over the DC Universe and leaving a wake of some truly gripping stories. One of those is the current "The War of Jokes and Riddles" storyline by writer Tom King and artist Mikel Janin, which has been building to an exceptionally juicy climax.
Communicated through USA Today, DC has revealed the Dark Knight's greatest shame; Batman once attempted to murder the Riddler. Knife in hand, the Caped Crusader was ready to shiv his nemesis, only to be stopped by (ironically) the Joker. Bruce confesses this all to Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, who he has recently proposed marriage to.
Bruce conveyed this information in order for Selina to make her decision to his proposal knowing everything about him. Selina takes the story in stride, ultimately telling Bruce to ask her once more to marry him. This is her response:
Awwww. It's a heck of a development for the pair, but as is often the case with superheroes, don't expect things to go smoothly. This change to Bruce's life is going to have a major impact, something that King will be exploring in the upcoming storyline "Rules of Engagement."
Needless to say, everyone from the Justice League to Alfred is going to have an opinion on this engagement, something that King is excited to explore. The writer had this to say about what's to come:
“Most superheroes, you make them happy and you end conflict — you give Spider-Man a wife and where do you go from there? But Batman’s the opposite: You give him happiness and you create conflict, because he’s fundamentally a sad character.”
Batman #32 drops in comic shops this Wednesday, October 4.
